Amalgam is safe, confirms two new studies

Two independent studies published by the Journal of the American Medical Association in April add to the body of scientific literature supporting the safety of dental amalgam (silver-colored fillings).

According to the studies, there were no statistically significant differences in kidney function and other neurobiological outcomes among children who received amalgam fillings versus those treated with tooth-colored composite fillings.

Dental amalgam is a stable alloy made primarily by combining mercury, silver, tin and copper. Although concerns were once raised about its mercury content, dental amalgam’s combination of mercury with other metals renders it safe for use in repairing tooth enamel damaged by decay.

The bottom line for dental patients: Dental amalgam remains among several safe, effective options for treating dental decay. Of course, the best option is preventing dental disease before it gets a foothold through good oral hygiene at home, a balanced diet and regular dental visits.
