June 16, 2004
San Francisco — California’s largest dental health plan today announced the appointment of Patrick S. Steele as its new senior vice president and chief information officer.
Steele, 54, will oversee all Information Technology (IT) functions for the holding company that includes Delta Dental of California, Delta Dental Insurance Company, Delta Dental of Pennsylvania and their affiliates, which collectively operate in 16 states plus the District of Columbia. He assumes the responsibilities of Martin Whelan, who is retiring.
Steele is a 35-year veteran of Albertsons, Inc., the nation’s second largest grocery and prescription drug retailer, serving most recently as executive vice president and chief information officer. A graduate of the University of Washington, Steele holds degrees in both mathematics and business administration.
"Mr. Steele’s extensive experience in technology implementation and strategic planning make him the ideal choice to move Delta Dental along a number of critical technology fronts," said Gary D. Radine, president and CEO.
Steele will be based at the holding company’s headquarters in San Francisco.
Delta Dental of California is part of a San Francisco-based holding company system that collectively serves nearly 21 million subscribers in both commercial and government-sponsored programs throughout the nation. It is also a member of the Delta Dental Plans Association, whose 39 independent companies cooperate on nationwide programs that today cover more than 45 million of the approximately 155 million Americans with dental benefits.
